ABSTRACT:
Saliva is a mirror of the body. The ability to utilize saliva to monitor the health or disease status of an individual is a highly desirable goal for healthcare and biomedical research. As an accessible bodily fluid that can be obtained without invasive methods, it fulfills the requirements of the ideal diagnostic medium. NIH invested over $100 millions in saliva diagnosis during the last five years and targets to determine the efficacy of using salivary diagnostics to monitor health and diagnose systemic diseases by year 2013. Recent advances in high throughput technology have made it possible to identify human salivary biomarkers which can be used to diagnose cancers at an early, curable stage or to select the optimal therapy for individual patients. Toward these goals, we have developed and implemented a wide array of high throughput tools, including, genomic, transcriptomic, metabolomic and proteomic profiling of human saliva to identify disease specific human salivary biomarkers, such as mRNAs, microRNAs, proteins and metabolites. Furthermore, nanotechnology advances our ability to directly detect trace amount of biomarkers in human saliva. This talk will provide specific examples of human salivary biomarker discovery and validation efforts along with most cutting-edge biosensor technology enabled saliva-based point-of-care handheld equipment. This talk also will show the first effort to identify human salivary proteome in human history led by a team of Chinese scientists.
