Research interests:
Her research interests include pharmaceutical analysis of TraditionalChinese Medicine, Natural products, Phytochemistry, Screening for biological activity,Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), as well as design and development of noveltherapeutics. Work in recent years has largely focused on PharmaceuticalAnalysis of Chinese Proprietary and Herbal Medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicinehas become increasingly popular in recent years. Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM)and Chinese Proprietary Medicine (CPM) are readily available in Chinese medicalhalls, health shops, supermarkets, pharmacies and even via the Internet. Someproblems associated with herbal medicine include adulteration with westernmedicine, toxic heavy metals, misidentification, substitution, lack of qualitycontrol etc. Her laboratory has successfully developed a system to rapidly massscreen for western drug adulterants in complex herbal matrices. Her researchgroup is in the process of developing analytical methods to extract and profileChinese medicinal herbs. Chemical reference markers will also be identified.Controlling the quality of starting materials is the first step towardsensuring the quality of the final herbal product.
